Information about SMA Sunny Boy Smart Energy 6 kW Single-Phase Hybrid Solar Inverter

The SMA Sunny Boy Smart Energy 6.0 SBSE6.0-50 single-phase hybrid solar inverter combines photovoltaic inverter and battery inverter functions in a single unit, enabling a home to produce, store, and manage solar energy. It offers a rated output power of 6,000 watts, features 3 independent maximum power point trackers, and supports an installed PV power of up to 12,000 watts peak.

Its high-voltage battery connection allows surplus solar energy to be stored and used later, increasing the utilization of the energy generated by the system. In addition, it includes advanced energy management, production optimization, monitoring, and emergency power supply functions, as part of the SMA Home Energy Solution ecosystem.

Two-in-one hybrid inverter for solar energy and storage

The Sunny Boy Smart Energy combines a photovoltaic inverter and a battery inverter in the same device. Energy from the solar modules can be converted directly into alternating current to supply household loads or feed the grid, and can also be used to charge a compatible battery.

When the installation needs stored energy, the inverter converts the direct current supplied by the battery into alternating current compatible with the electrical installation.

SMA allows this model to be used as a hybrid inverter, photovoltaic inverter, or battery inverter, providing flexibility for both new installations and different energy storage configurations.

6-kilowatt rated power in single-phase

The SBSE6.0-50 model provides a rated active power of 6,000 watts at 230 volts and 50 hertz, with a maximum apparent power of 6,000 volt-amperes.

The nominal AC voltage is 230 or 240 volts, with an operating range between 184 and 253 volts. The rated output current is 26.1 amperes and the maximum current reaches 30 amperes.

The power factor is 1 at rated power and can be configured within the range specified by the manufacturer to suit grid requirements.

Up to 12 kilowatts peak of photovoltaic power

Although its rated output power is 6 kilowatts, the Sunny Boy Smart Energy 6.0 supports a maximum PV module power of 12,000 watts peak.

This capacity makes it possible to oversize the PV array relative to the inverter’s rated power, a strategy that can improve production during periods of lower irradiation and increase the annual yield of the installation.

3 independent MPP trackers

The inverter incorporates 3 independent maximum power point trackers, with one input per tracker. This configuration makes it easier to install module strings with different orientations, tilts, or production conditions.

Inputs A and B can be configured for parallel operation under the compatible conditions and firmware versions indicated by SMA.

Integrated emergency power supply

The Sunny Boy Smart Energy includes a manual emergency power supply function that can be used during a grid outage to supply selected loads using the energy available in the battery and the PV system.

The emergency power output provides a rated power of up to 3,680 watts at 230 volts. Activation of this mode is manual and requires the electrical installation to be prepared according to SMA instructions.

Automatic backup available via accessories

The inverter is also prepared to be part of an automatic backup system using compatible SMA accessories. This function requires additional hardware and should not be confused with the integrated emergency power output.

In a compatible backup configuration, SMA specifies a single-phase backup rated power of up to 7,300 watts for the inverter, with temporary higher capacity for certain peak loads.

Available backup accessories for the range include solutions such as SMA Backup 1P and SMA Backup 3P, which should be selected according to the system design.

Maximum efficiency of 98.1 percent

The Sunny Boy Smart Energy achieves a maximum efficiency of 98.1 percent, enabling solar energy conversion with low electrical losses.

The system uses a transformerless architecture and natural convection cooling, eliminating the need for fans during normal operation.

Typical acoustic emissions are approximately 35 decibels, making it suitable for residential environments.

SMA ShadeFix to optimize solar production

The inverter incorporates SMA ShadeFix, SMA’s integrated shade management technology. This function analyzes the behavior of the PV array and optimizes the operating point of the modules when partial shading or other conditions affect the production curve.

The function is integrated directly into the inverter software and does not require individual optimizers installed on each module to perform its maximum power point management function.

SMA ArcFix for arc fault detection

The Sunny Boy Smart Energy incorporates SMA ArcFix, a DC arc fault detection system. The device monitors the PV installation and can stop energy feed-in when it identifies conditions associated with an electrical arc.

This function is part of SMA’s integrated protection features designed to increase the operational safety of the PV installation.

Integrated electrical protections

The inverter incorporates different internal monitoring and protection systems for the PV installation, the battery, and the grid connection.

  • Input-side disconnection device.
